EL PASO'S MIKE GRIEGO HONORED
Local favorite named to Premier Development League Team of the Week
USL News Release

Wednesday, June 18, 2008

TAMPA, FL – United Soccer Leagues announced today the Premier Development League Team of the Week highlighting the 2008 PDL expansion side Newark Ironbound Express and the performance of forward Jerrod Laventure in their 4-0 win over the previously unbeaten Ocean City Barons on Sunday, June 15.

On enemy soil, Laventure netted goals in the 29th, 79th and 82nd minute to secure the win for Irondbound. All three of Laventure’s goals followed the game-winner scored by Chris Karcz in the 9th minute.

Ocean City, who is historically brilliant on their own turf, was not without scoring opportunities. The Barons kept Ironbound goalkeeper Tomer Chencinshi active throughout the match, firing 13 shots on the night. Chencinshi responded with 13 saves, ending the match without surrendering a goal. The shutout was Chencinshi’s third on the season and fourth of the year for Newark.

Another goalkeeper worthy of a nod is Tyler Baldock of the Abbotsford Mariners. Baldock was instrumental in the four points Abbotsford earned in Week Nine, accounting for four saves in a 4-0 win over Spokane, and another six saves in a 0-0 draw with Vancouver.

Deadly off the bench, Indiana’s Alhaji Musa Kamara came on to score two goals in just 52 minutes of work last week for the Indiana Invaders. He found the back of the net in the 65th minute against Toronto and in the 88th minute a day later against the Kalamazoo Outrage.

Way down South, El Paso drew themselves back into the playoff picture with a four-point week against the DFW Tornados. The Patriots first equaled DFW’s effort, 1-1 on Friday, June 13, then slipped by the Tornados the flowing evening, 1-0. Both goals were scored by forward Mike Griego, who played all but four minutes in the two matches.
