El Paso, TX (May 9, 2009)- A player’s first goal is one that he always remembers and Cristian Zamora of the El Paso Patriots always will remember his, which came in just his second game with the Patriots and helped them earn a 2-1 victory against the Rio Grande Valley Bravos on Saturday night at Patriot Stadium.
Zamora’s goal in the 26th minute gave El Paso a 1-0 lead and gave him a memory he will never forget. "I felt happy, because it was my second game," he said." I felt I could score my first goal, and I did."
Zamora was uncertain how he should feel about his first goal and he definetly had not made any plans about how he would celebrate it.
"I did not know how to celebrate, "he said. "I went crazy, but I did it for the team."
However, the party didn’t last too long. The Bravos responded with a goal in the 42nd minute that tied the game at 1-1, and the score would stay that way into the half. But this game not meant to be left tied it was one of the Patriots’ local players who stepped up to do the job.
Rodrigo Morin, who entered the game as a substitute in the 62nd minute, came on and scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal in the 79th minute.
"I guess luck, I was at the right spot at the right moment, "Morin said, explaining his goal." It feels great.
"It’s a team effort, but it was my time this time so it's pretty good."
The Patriots are 2-0 overall and currently sits in first place of the Mid South Division and first place in the US Open Cup qualifier, while the Bravos are 0-1-1 for the season.
Doing well in the PDL and the U.S. Open Cup are important to the Patriots, coach Hugo Samano said. "That is what we are looking for, "he said of Saturday night’s win. "It’s twice that we are left passing the first round."
Asked what the team needs to do, Samano said, "First qualify, and surpass what we did last year."
